🌿Welcome to Community Calm🌿

A grassroots wellbeing service using nature to support recovery

Who We Are

We deliver structured, non-clinical interventions for adults experiencing depression, anxiety, loneliness, social isolation, or emotional distress. Our nature-based approach supports whole-person recovery and aligns with NICE guidelines on community mental health, green social prescribing, and holistic care.

Our programme is informed by the World Health Organisation’s definition of health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” We focus on restoring wellbeing through meaningful activity, connection with nature, and peer-supported environments.

Sessions are underpinned by principles from the 12-step recovery model, emphasising personal growth, mutual support, and a values-led approach to healing. While not a formal 12-step programme, we draw on its ethos of community, accountability, and empowerment—“principles before personalities.”

Participants engage in evidence-informed, low-intensity therapeutic activities such as:

1. Seasonal horticulture and light conservation work

2. Guided nature walks that promote physical activity and emotional regulation

3. Green skills and environmental learning that build confidence and purpose

4. Creative therapeutic practices that support self-expression and resilience

Sessions are held in peaceful, restorative outdoor locations across Berkshire:

1. An animal-assisted therapy farm in Maidenhead

2. The Wildlife Trust site in Windsor Great Park

3. A co-designed Wellbeing Garden in Slough, launching later this year

Our service is suitable for referral via NHS Social Prescribing Link Workers, community mental health teams, and VCSE partners. It offers a safe, trauma-informed, and inclusive space that complements statutory care and supports long-term recovery and wellbeing.

Measuring Our Impact

At Community Calm, we keep it simple and focused. Our impact is measured through short questionnaires and verbal feedback collected before and after each session. This helps us understand how participants feel and track any changes in their wellbeing over time.

Before the Session

We ask a few short questions to understand how participants are feeling at the start.

During the Session

We observe and engage with participants to get a real-time sense of their mood and interaction.

After the Session

We gather quick verbal feedback and follow-up questions to track changes in wellbeing.
